Serving Size:

  • Will make about 4 6” cake pans or 2 8”.

Measurements:

Cake

  • 2 cups (260g) all-purpose flour

  • 2 cups (400g) granulated sugar

  • 3/4 cup (60g) cocoa powder

  • 2 tsp (8g) baking powder

  • 1 1/2 tsp (9g) baking soda

  • 1 tsp (6g) salt

  • 1 cup (237g) hot water

  • 2 tsp (6g) espresso powder

  • 1 cup (240g) buttermilk

  • 1/2 cup (112g) vegetable oil

  • 2 tsp (8g) vanilla extract

  • 2 eggs (112g)

  • 1 tsp (4g) white vinegar

Buttercream

  • 4 sticks (454g) of salted butter room temp.

  • 3/4 cup (150g) of shortening (Crisco)

  • 8 cups (980g) of powdered sugar

  • 2tbsp (or to preference) of vanilla extract

  • 20 Oreos (crushed)

  • add half n half (or heavy creme) till soft peak or desired texture

Step By Step

  • Step 1

    • Preheat oven to 350°F.

  • Step 2

    • In a bowl, add your all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Mix dry ingredients (preferably with a whisk).

  • Step 3

    • In a separate bowl or glass measuring cup, add your hot water and espresso powder and mix till completely incorporated.

  • Step 4

    • In that bowl add your buttermilk, vegetable oil, and vanilla extract. Mix till almost incorporated (doesn’t have to be completely mixed since oil won’t mix with water).

  • Step 5

    • Pour the solution of buttermilk, vegetable oil, vanilla, hot water, and espresso powder into the bowl of dry ingredients.

  • Step 6

    • Mix till fully incorporated.

  • Step 7

    • Add in your 2 eggs, 1 at a time.

  • Step 8

    • Lastly, add your white vinegar.

  • Step 9

    • Butter your pans, this will make about 4 6” layers or 2 8” layers.

  • Step 10

    • Cook for 20-35 min, or until toothpick comes out clean.

  • Step 11

    • For buttercream, Add your room temp. salted butter and shortening into a stand mixer and mix for 5-10 minutes on medium speed, or till mixture becomes white. If butter isn’t room temp, put it in microwave on short incribels till softened.

  • Step 12

    • Once butter and shortening are mixed till white, slowly add your powdered sugar in on the slowest speed. If mixture gets thick slowly add in half n half.

  • Step 13

    • Once powdered sugar is added in add in your vanilla extract. If it is still to thick add in half n half till you get a soft peak (like in picture).

  • Step 14

    • Once cakes are completely cooled and icing is to desired texture, you can start stacking and decorating your cake!
